The Michelin-starred Manzke and Bicyclette in LA are closing

Manzke and Bicyclette, a restaurant duo from two of LA’s most celebrated chefs, are set to close on March 2nd. This is the latest in a handful of notable closures in early 2024 – and following About 70 restaurants and bars closed in 2023.

Walter and Margarita Manzke, whose acclaimed restaurant République will be the couple’s only remaining restaurant in LA, closed Petty Cash Taqueria and Sari Sari Store last year.

Her gourmet restaurant Manzke opened on Pico Boulevard in early 2022 won a Michelin star later that year; It retained its rating in the coveted restaurant guide in 2023. Below Manzke is Bicyclette, a bistro that opened in 2021 and was named one of them The 101 Best Restaurants in LA last year from the LA Times. The newspaper’s restaurant critic, Bill Addison I called recently Bicyclette “a valentine to the timeless Parisian bistro.”

“Our partners, along with Marge and I, have decided that it is best to close Manzke and Bicyclette,” Walter Manzke said in a statement to The Times. “We will continue to operate the two restaurants as before until March 2nd. Once we have clarified things and have further details, we will be happy to share them with you.”

Manzke declined to provide a reason for the closures, but rather a representative from partner restaurant group Sprout LA said Eater LAThe company that first publicized the closures said they were “financial losses.”

Last year, in an interview with The Times, Manzke cited rising labor, ingredient and even building maintenance costs as factors that contributed to her decision to close Petty Cash in October. “It was an extremely difficult decision,” he said last fall. “I don’t even know if it was a ‘decision’ because I had to close it. The truth is that it was not in the best financial shape and that has to do with rising costs across the board and the bottom line.”

In mid-December, they closed their fast-and-casual food stand at Grand Central Market and announced the closure without notice on Instagram. Several LA restaurants have already closed in early 2024, including Pearl River Deli, Spartina, Milk Jar and The Dragon.

The pandemic has changed the landscape for restaurants, Manzke told The Times last year — not just in the cost of goods and services, but also in the way diners dine. Today they are more demanding and spending conscious.

“They’ll go out and still spend quite a bit of money, but they seem to be more careful with it, and that makes it extremely difficult to start a new project,” Manzke said. “It’s not just about the cost, but also about getting it going. I mean, we felt that with Bicyclette and Manzke; It’s even new and our names have some appeal, but it’s really challenging to open new stores and a new location in these times. Everyone I know who has opened a new restaurant says the same thing.”

“Ingenuity is everywhere,” the 2022 Michelin Guide wrote of Manzke, announcing the 10-course tasting menu interwoven with French, Californian and Asian influences.

The Times too recently called Bicyclette is one of the region’s most romantic dining destinations.

“Cheese slicers dissolve like an illusion,” Addison wrote. “Sausages range from boudin blanc with the scent of nutmeg that jumps against the fork to taut, elegantly spiced merguez. The broth for the bouillabaisse is distilled into a pungent seafood liqueur. Through a picture window next to the small bar, my preferred seat in the dining room, I observe the kitchen team as a blurry place of constant movement. Do I like it there because Margarita’s jeweled, ruler-perfect fruit tarts are displayed on a counter a few feet away, almost within arm’s reach? Yes, and Bicyclette’s bartenders are good conversationalists too.”

In addition to maintaining République in Mid-Wilshire, Walter and Margarita Manzke remain partners in Wildflour, a popular bakery and café chain in the Philippines.
